CHAPTER FIFTEEN

They paused at midday so the humans could eat lunch and the dragons could drink from a nearby stream. Some of the younger dragons chased fish and gulped down the few they actually caught with glee. Joleyn sat on a sun-warmed rock and watched them.

Leti flew off to flutter around a bit with the other virkin, then all of them landed on the flat rock next to Joleyn’s perch. Leti asked Joleyn to put some of the sweet nuts on the rock, and all the virkin shared them, touching Joleyn’s heart. Leti was a kind and generous soul to share her special and rare treat with her friends.

Jim came over and sat beside Joleyn, and they shared lunch while the others settled in the grassy area nearby to eat and chat. Joleyn had noticed the two black dragons flying together among the Draconian group, and she remembered how Lady Zallra had shapeshifted into a dragon. Both the Prince and his wife were black dragon shapeshifters. Descendants of the great wizard who had created dragonkind many millennia ago. It was all so incredible to Joleyn that she was hobnobbing with such important and magical people. Truly, this was the greatest adventure of her lifetime, she was certain.

Joleyn was wearing one of the fine gowns Lady Zallra had packed for her and the lush fur-lined cloak Jim had given her. She was as ready as she would ever be to encounter the foreign King and do what little she could to help further the mission of her party. She just hoped the ice dragon situation worked out favorably. It was a sticky one, to be sure.

As they drew ever nearer to the capital, Joleyn could feel the tension rise in Essie’s muscles. The dragon matron had deep thoughts on her mind and was probably stressing over the fate of the baby ice dragon she would meet soon. Joleyn wanted only to be supportive, not needy and asking silly questions at a time like this.

The few times she’d tried to initiate conversation with Essie as they flew, Essie had answered, but more curtly than usual. Joleyn figured that meant Essie wanted to be alone with her thoughts and left it at that. She would try again later and try to give the dragoness encouraging words, but Joleyn understood and would do her best not to annoy her friend. Joleyn truly believed that, sometimes, silence really was golden.

“What’s that?” Jim asked as Joleyn lifted a bit of embroidered linen out of the package that Bitsy had given her.

“A gift from Bitsy,” Joleyn replied, opening the fabric to find that the elder had given Joleyn a lovely scarf of the finest white linen, embroidered with intricate and colorful dragons. Her breath caught as she realized the dragons were Bitsy’s family members. “Oh! This is too fine. She shouldn’t have given it to me.”

“She must really like you,” Jim observed. “I recognize some of those dragons. Those two are elders of the Northern Lair.”

“Bitsy’s dragon family,” Joleyn breathed, examining the fine work as they spoke.
